Hudson, N.Y. | $995,000

An 1810 farmhouse with three bedrooms and one and a half bathrooms, on a 1.2-acre lot

This small city has long been a popular weekend destination for New Yorkers, as it is just a two-and-a-half-hour drive or a two-hour train ride from Manhattan. The local businesses, including farm-to-table restaurants and antiques stores, are a big draw, as are the Hudson River views.

This house, which the sellers bought last year and extensively renovated, is about a 15-minute drive from the center of Hudson, affording it easy access to all the city has to offer, although it feels private and remote. It is also about 15 minutes from Olana State Historic Site, a palatial home designed by Calvert Vaux with the landscape painter Frederic Edwin Church, whose furniture and art remains in place.

Size: 2,588 square feet

Price per square foot: $384

Indoors: The house sits at the end of a long road. A private driveway leads to the entrance, where tall glass double doors open to a set of walnut doors. Beyond is a foyer with limewashed walls.

To the right is a bright living room with a sleek fireplace and more limewashed walls. Off one side of this space is a small office.

Across the foyer is a formal dining room with a decorative fireplace and a hammered-metal chandelier. This room connects to the kitchen, which was gut renovated by the sellers and has a black Aga range, walnut countertops and black cabinetry with unlacquered brass hardware. A wood-paneled mudroom and a powder room with black-and-white tile floors are also in this part of the house.

All three bedrooms are on the second floor. To the right of the landing is the primary bedroom, which has hardwood floors and space for a king-size bed; the en suite bathroom has a soaking tub, a separate shower, a marble-topped vanity and a heated floor lined with Ann Sacks tile in a black-and-white geometric pattern.

The two guest rooms are off the upstairs hallway. Both have hardwood floors; one is big enough to hold a queen-size bed, while the other has space for a double bed and a desk.

Outdoor space: The property is more than an acre, with gently sloping hills and a clearing framed by mature trees that holds a firepit. The fenced-in swimming pool has a covered cabana on one side, with storage for towels and pool toys and a refrigerator for cold beverages.

Taxes: $4,759 (estimated)

Oakland, Calif. | $995,000

A midcentury-modern house built in 1949, with two bedrooms and two bathrooms, on a 0.1-acre lot

The sellers embraced this home’s midcentury modern aesthetic, choosing interior and exterior paint in vibrant blues and greens and period-appropriate light fixtures inside and on the wraparound deck, which has sweeping views of the Oakland hills.

The neighborhood, Lincoln Highlands, is close to shopping, dining and recreation areas. Joaquin Miller Park, which has a playground, a dog park and hiking and biking trails, is less than 10 minutes away by car. Several BART stations are within a 15-minute drive, and San Francisco is 20 to 40 minutes away, depending on traffic.

Size: 1,495 square feet

Price per square foot: $666

Indoors: From the street, a path lined with native plants leads to the bright blue front door, brightened by a globe-style light fixture.

Inside is a sunken living-and-dining room with large corner windows that offer views of the deck and the hills in the distance. The room’s focal point is an original fireplace with a tile hearth and a surround made of long bricks.

To the left of the dining area is a kitchen with a custom tile backsplash in shades of blue, stainless steel appliances and aqua cabinetry that includes a built-in desk.

Both bedrooms are on the other side of the house, off a hallway extending from the living room. The primary bedroom, at the far end, includes a walk-in closet and dressing area; the en suite bathroom has a soaking tub and separate shower. The guest room has an en suite bathroom with a walk-in shower.

Outdoor space: The deck in front of the house has striking views of the neighborhood and ample space for dining. A patio around the corner is partially shaded by the roof, with an outdoor kitchen and a barbecue at one end. The backyard has a mature magnolia tree and a lemon tree. The attached garage holds one car; there is room to park another in the driveway.

St. Paul, Minn. | $995,000

A 1901 Edwardian house with five bedrooms, two full bathrooms and two half bathrooms, on a 0.3-acre lot

This house was designed by Augustus Gauger, a local architect, for a railroad contractor. Many of the original details remain intact, and the owners have chosen wallpaper patterns and paint colors that might have been used when the home was new.

The property is four blocks from Summit Avenue, a street lined with some of the area’s grandest Victorian homes. The neighborhood is lively, with a children’s bookstore, a coffee shop and a French bistro within a five-minute walk. Downtown St. Paul is less than a 10-minute drive; commuting to Minneapolis takes about 20 minutes.

Size: 4,699 square feet

Price per square foot: $212

Indoors: From the sidewalk, steps lead up to a wide covered porch. The front door, flanked by two long leaded-glass windows, opens into a foyer with intricately patterned hardwood floors.

The hardwood floors continue into the parlor to the left, currently used as a home study. This room has a fireplace with an Italian tile surround in a vibrant shade of green and walls painted coral with gold detailing. A powder room is also in this part of the house.

The formal living room to the right of the foyer has wallpaper inspired by popular vintage patterns and colors. This room has access to an enclosed porch and to a formal dining room with a built-in bar and cabinetry for storing dishes and glassware.

A butler’s pantry connects the dining room to the kitchen, which has a stained-glass window and updated appliances, including a Viking range. From here, a staircase leads to the third floor, once home to the servant’s quarters.

The main staircase, in the foyer, leads to the second floor. The two bedrooms to the right of the landing are roughly equal in size and have doors topped by stained-glass transom windows. The primary bedroom is painted a dark green, and the other bedroom, used as a den, has a fireplace with an ornate mantel.

Next door is a guest room with floral wallpaper, and at the other end of the hall is the fourth bedroom, as well as a laundry room. The bathroom, off the center of the hall, has a claw-foot soaking tub.

The fifth bedroom, another full bathroom and another half bathroom are on the third floor, which includes an open space used as a den and a kitchenette.

Outdoor space: The original carriage house currently serves as a two-bedroom rental. The yard between it and the main house is neatly landscaped with grass. The detached garage holds two cars.
