This house is one of the oldest in Signal Mountain, once a popular second-home destination for wealthy Chattanooga residents. Today, the town is a mix of full-time residents and vacationers drawn to the hiking trails and mountain views. The home, which began life as a smaller stone structure, was later expanded into two levels and recently updated by an interior designer from Charleston, S.C., with furnishings that are available to buy.

It is less than a 10-minute drive from the town’s public library, a grocery store and a handful of restaurants. Chattanooga is about 20 minutes away. Driving to Nashville or Atlanta takes about two and a half hours.

An 1891 limestone house with three bedrooms and two and a half bathrooms, on a 0.1-acre lot

This home in the Potter Highlands neighborhood, known as the Mackay House, was built by Hugh Mackay, a Scottish mining engineer, as a wedding gift for his bride, and remained in the Mackay family until the early 1990s. Like the neighborhood, it is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The most recent owner spent decades updating it, retaining much of the historic character and many of the original materials.

It is less than a five-minute drive from Denver North High School, Valdez Elementary School and Highland Park, which has a library, a playground and basketball courts. Downtown Denver and the Colorado State Capitol are about 15 minutes away.
